Diversity - conflict potential or added value for companies?

Our society is becoming more diverse in every respect – as are the customers of our companies. In this context, employers who promote diversity in their workforce, have a competitive advantage. Nevertheless, when you want to put diversity into practice, many questions arise, says Doris Tomanek, Director of Human Resources for CEE and Austria at UniCredit Bank Austria. For example: How can companies sustainably increase their share of women and are fixed gender rates really reasonable? Is sexual orientation an issue in the company? How successful is the integration of disabled employees and what do the customers have to say about the right to wear a headscarf?

In her keynote speech, the successful manager covers different aspects of diversity - gender, age, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation and disability. She does not only emphasis the unquestioned value of diversity, but also addresses the conflicts that may arise in the management of diversity - as well as solutions to reduce and resolve them.

"For Bank Austria and UniCredit, the mixture of personalities from different countries, with their individual qualities and abilities, is a very special asset, which is deliberately used and held in high esteem by the enterprise group," says the experienced Human Resources Manager. "It is the enormous diversity of the group that has made the company a success." This commitment has been honored with numerous awards, most recently in 2011 with the first Price at the DiversCity competition, held by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.

Doris Tomanek is a graduate of the Vienna University of Economics and started her career at Mobil Oil Austria. From 1988 to 2002 she worked for Coca-Cola in various management positions with HR responsibility. Since 2006, she has been Head of Human Resources, Austria and CEE, at UniCredit. In this role, she manages about 60,000 employees in 18 CEE countries and Austria. Last year, Doris Tomanek was appointed Board member of Bank Austria.

How to recruit and retain the best employees

The number one success factor in business is to identify the best people, to draw their attention and convince them of your company. Enthusiastic staff produces happy customers and a constructive corporate culture. Prof. Dr. Jörg Knoblauch reveals in his keynote speech which are the proven steps to turn employees into co-entrepreneurs.

The bestselling author, whose books have been translated into twelve languages, reveals the secret of how a company becomes really attractive for high-quality employees. After all, successful HR work is not a mere coincidence. As managing partner of several medium-sized businesses, Knoblauch knows from personal experience, how intangible and tangible incentives can be optimally combined to enable a company to recruit and retain the best employees.

Based on his ABC- strategy, the keynote speaker also shows how to recognize good employees: Those who have "A-staff" among their employees can count themselves lucky, because they identify themselves with the corporate objectives and are fully committed to the company, says Knoblauch. "B”-or “C-employees" are hardly or not at all interested in pushing the company forward. These employees act destructively, which has a negative impact on the performance and competitiveness of the company.

After studying engineering and obtaining a degree in Business Administration (MBA) in the U.S., Knoblauch pursued a Ph.D. at the University of Innsbruck. An honorary professorship at the University of Nürtingen-Geislingen and various teaching jobs have led him to other universities in Germany and abroad.

Knoblauch is Managing Partner at tempus, persolog and tempus-consulting. The group has won numerous awards, including the Ludwig-Erhard-Prize Competition in 2002 and the "Best Factory Award", an award for the Best Management of Small Companies in Germany.

Working beyond Borders - Challenges for HR

To secure continuous growth in a difficult economic environment is also a challenge for HR-Management. A study conducted worldwide by IBM in 2010 shows that Chief Human Resources Officers have two main objectives in mind: increasing operational efficiency and growth - each paired with the demands of a new generation of employees towards the company management.

IBM, which celebrates its centenary in 2011, can look back at a long tradition of innovative HR solutions. In his keynote speech, Alfred Wiktorin embarks the audience on a journey from the past into the future of Human Resource Management; a journey from the days when HR was mainly the administration of staff, to the times where HR-managers are in charge of developing resource strategies for new and unknown markets, searching for new partners in recruiting or designing appropriate conditions for the employees, and last not least to the future of HR. According to the Expert, HR-Management will face challenges such as innovative concepts for working hours, Workforce Analytics, integrated Talent Management or the building of collaboration platforms.

Alfred Wiktorin is an internal consultant at IBM in the area of Human Resources for CEE and MEA. In his role as a Workforce partner he and his colleagues are responsible for Strategic Resource Analysis, Planning and Human Resources Development. After his education at the HTBL at Vienna X, Alfred Wiktorin started his career at the IT group in the Technical Sales Force. In his 25-year career, he went through positions as Service Manager for the Mid Range Area, Head of Technical Training for IBM Austria, GBS Consultant, Learning Leader CEMA, Workforce Partner Russia / CIS and Workforce Partner Sales & Distribution CEE.
